Recently I went on a short photo walk to help a friend learn some of the basics of the new camera she had acquired. While we were walking I noticed that she was holding the camera a good distance from her eye. I'm sure it must have been that she didn't understand how to adjust the viewfinder, however holding the camera away from her face like that she wasn't getting as steady a shot as she could have if she had just held the camera to her eye.
For compact cameras and cell phone cameras that have no viewfinder and only have the big live view screen just brace your elbows against your body or any surface that is steady.
